Flag facts

How many national flags are there?
There are 194 flags for the 194 UN member states. Counting observer states, territories, and partially recognised states pushes the total higher, but 194 is the standard sovereign-nation count used here.
What is the most common colour on flags?
Red is the most common flag colour, followed closely by white and blue. The rarest by far is purple, which appears on only a couple of flags.
Which flags are the hardest to tell apart?
Classic look-alikes include Chad and Romania, Indonesia and Monaco, Ireland and Côte d'Ivoire, and the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Russia. Playing Guess the Flag with a continent filter is the fastest way to learn the differences.
