Border Chain

Hop from country to country across shared land borders. How long a chain can you build with no repeats?

Finding a starting country...

Border Chain — connect the world one land border at a time

You are given a starting country. Name a country it shares a land border with, and the chain moves there. Now name a neighbour of that one — and so on. Every country can be used only once, so the map slowly closes in around you. The game ends when you name a country that does not actually border the current one, or when the country you have reached has no unused neighbours left. It rewards knowing not just where countries are, but who touches whom — the kind of connective knowledge that makes the whole map click into place.

How to play

Read the current country, then type the name of a country that borders it — the autocomplete list helps. A correct answer extends the chain and moves you to that country. A country already in the chain, or one that does not share a land border, ends the run. If you reach a country whose neighbours are all used up, the chain banks as a completed run.

What this game improves

  • Builds a mental graph of which countries actually touch — the hardest part of regional geography
  • Teaches the big land-border hubs (Russia, China, Brazil, Germany) and how regions connect
  • Every run is different, so it stays replayable
  • Great preparation for map tests that ask you to trace routes or list neighbours

Tips

  • Aim for the high-degree countries — Russia, China, Brazil, Germany, DR Congo all border many others and keep your options open
  • Avoid painting yourself into a corner: island-adjacent peninsulas (Portugal, Denmark, South Korea) are dead ends
  • Think a move ahead — pick the neighbour that itself has the most unused exits
  • Central Europe, the Balkans and Central Africa are dense with borders and good for long chains

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a border?
A shared land border. Sea crossings and maritime boundaries do not count, so island nations with no land neighbours cannot be part of a chain.
Can I use a country twice?
No. Each country can appear once. That constraint is what makes long chains hard — the map keeps shrinking as you go.
How does the game end?
Either you name a country that is not a neighbour of the current one (chain broken), or you reach a country whose every land neighbour is already used (dead end — the run is banked at its full length).
Is it free?
Yes — free, no account, no ads, unlimited runs.
