An animal on a flag is almost always a national symbol tied to identity, myth or native wildlife. Grouping them by the animal makes them easy to learn.
Birds
- Mexico — a golden eagle perched on a prickly-pear cactus, devouring a rattlesnake, from the Aztec founding legend of Tenochtitlan. The image is inside the coat of arms in the centre white band.
- Egypt — the golden Eagle of Saladin, holding a scroll with the country's name.
- Zambia — an African fish eagle in flight above the coloured stripes.
- Zimbabwe — the soapstone Zimbabwe Bird, a stylised eagle, on the white triangle.
- Papua New Guinea — a golden bird of paradise in silhouette on the red half of the flag.
- Guatemala — the resplendent quetzal, the national bird and a symbol of liberty, on a scroll in the coat of arms.
- Dominica — the imperial (sisserou) parrot, which makes Dominica the only national flag containing purple, on the central disc.
- Uganda — the grey crowned crane, standing on one leg, on the white central disc.
- Kiribati — a golden frigatebird flying over a rising sun and stylised ocean waves.
- Ecuador and Bolivia — a condor within the coat of arms.
Mammals and reptiles
- Sri Lanka — a golden lion holding a sword (the "Lion Flag"), one of the most detailed animal figures on any flag.
- Bhutan — Druk, the white Thunder Dragon of Bhutanese mythology, clutching jewels in its claws, on a diagonal field of yellow and orange. Bhutan's name for itself, Druk Yul, means "Land of the Thunder Dragon".
- Eswatini, Fiji and others — a lion within the shield of the coat of arms.
- Croatia — the shield's crown of supporters and, historically, marten imagery (the currency, the kuna, is named after the marten).
Inside the coat of arms only
Many more flags feature animals within a small central coat of arms — Spain (a crowned lion and a castle), Ecuador and Bolivia (a condor), Andorra (cattle and other heraldic beasts on the quarters), Montenegro (a double-headed eagle and a lion), Serbia (a double-headed eagle), Albania (a double-headed eagle as the main charge, not in a shield). If a quiz counts arms, the list roughly doubles; double-headed eagles alone appear on the flags of Albania, Montenegro, Serbia and, historically, several others.
Animal flags tend to have one strong background colour with a small detailed emblem. The flag pie chart game trains you to read that signature and narrow the country fast.

National flags with a prominent animal (not only in a shield): Mexico, Egypt, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea, Dominica, Uganda, Kiribati, Guatemala, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Fiji. Wales uses a red dragon but is not a sovereign state. That is roughly a dozen out of 195 — animals are rare on flags, which is exactly why they are worth memorising.
